Encontré la fuente de "La Santa Cruz"

Como he venido pasando varias veces en frente de la Ermita de la Santa Cruz, mi intervención penúltima se refería a esta iglesia, me encantó por la belleza de su tratamiento de la fachada: el impresionante ataurique, la perfección de sus proporciones, pero sobre todo el Crucifijo en su parte superior: Es un conjunto maravilloso de un Jesús Crucificado, y a sus pies dos figuras: las clásicas María Magdalena y San Juán. Se puede ver la foto de este grupo en mi publicación del 25 de Mayo. No es que sea un admirador de lo fuerte que pueden llegar a ser las imagenes pintadas o esculpidas de nuestra religión, sino más bien de la maestría de sus escultores, el detalle a la perfección de sus elementos.

Leía en el libro de Verle Annis (el ya mencionado "Arquitectura de la Antigua Guatemala"), el articulo sobre la Ermita, y viendo el plano de la misma, me percaté que tenía un Búcaro, que son las fuentes adosadas a una pared, es decir media fuente. No la había visto, por la razón que muchos de estos lugares no abiertos al público están custodiados por un guardián y su familia y uno siempre se acerca con algo de cuidado, tratando de no levantar sospechas: no me habían permitido entrar más allá del atrio de la Iglesia.

Pero ya sabiendo de la existencia de esta Fuente, me decidí a buscarla. ¡Y la encontré! Es una bellísima fuente o búcaro de gran tamaño (ver a mi asistente parado junto a ella), con el mismo trato esmerado de la fachada de la Iglesia. Lastimosamente ha sido dañada desde hace mucho tiempo, pues las fotos en el libro de Annis ya presentan la falta de dos personajes principales que han sido "arrancados" de cuajo. En nuestros días el Búcaro se encuentra entre vegetación espesa, al lado de la casa del Guardián.

Un dato interesantísimo que tiene esta fuente es el año de su ejecución o dedicación: 1732

As in the last weeks I've been driving in front of "La Ermita de la Santa Cruz", I have marvelled at the quality of it's work in Ataurique, specially the crucifiction scene in the upper part of the façade, depicting a dead Jesus flanked by Saint Mary Magdalene and Saint John. A photo of this group can be seen in my earlier publication of the 25th of May. It is not a question of liking the strong level of pain and suffering that can reach our religion's paintings and sculptures, but rather a sentiment of awe at the incredible workmanship and seriouness of these colonial artisans, or artists.

I was reading the article on "La Ermita" in Verle Annis's book "The Architecture of Antigua Guatemala", when I noticed in the plan drawing that there should be a fountain, or rather half a fountain called en Spanish "Búcaro": half a fountain with its back leaning on a wall. I had not seen it surely because when you get near many of these ruins that are not open to the public, you have to be careful with the reaction of its keeper, who usually lives there along with his family... The first time I was not allowed any further than the atrium.

But now, knowing what was there, I came decided to find it, and: Lo and behold! it was exactly there. It is a big Búcaro (see my asistant besides it), showing the same kind of precious workmanship that I`ve been fussing all about! Saddly, vandalism has taken its toll: the two main characters in the front of the fountain have been destroyed. But this is old vandalism, because the photos from Annis's book already show they were not there since at least the 1930's.

The Búcaro is amid a jungle of plants, near the house occupied by the keeper.

A very interesting fact of this Búcaro: it has the year it was dedicated: 1732
