Estamos muy acostumbrados a las malas noticias sobre Guatemala, es que los periódicos dejarían de vender si no fueran amarillistas, pero también es cierto que en Guate. pasan muchas cosas feas, sobre todo en estos últimos años.
Mas he aquí una bonita noticia: La Carrera de San Silvestre cumplió 51 años de llevarse a cabo en Guatemala.

Los 31 de Diciembre se corre la Carrera de San Silvestre, es el último evento deportivo del año, y no se corre a las doce de la noche, como yo (y mucha gente más) creía.
Hace muchos años que yo oía de la Carrera: que se hacía en Brasil, que se hacía en otros lados y también en Guate! Pero como durante las Fiestas de Fin de Año todo lo relacionamos con las doce de la noche, yo creía que esta carrera se llevaba a cabo a esa hora, y me preguntaba: ¿Qué hace esa gente corriendo y sofocándose a Media Noche cuando debían estar chupando y bailando? (¡que deportista yo…!).

Bueno, la Carrera de San Silvestre se llama así, tengo entendido, pues el 31 de Diciembre está dedicado en el calendario de La Iglesia Católica a San Silvestre, y no, no se corre en Guatemala a las 12:00 de la noche sino en la tarde, a las 2:30 o algo así (¡La hora Chapina!) y tiene una longitud de 10 kilómetros. Esto lo supe pues ahora que mis hijos han crecido, me han salido meros deportistas, y uno de ellos ha participado en la Carrera desde hace dos años. Lo hemos ido a apoyar, tal como hacen miles y miles de gentes que corren y asisten a esta carrera que es un poco rara, pues no solo participan corredores profesionales, sino todo aquel que quiera hacerlo, (y que aguante los diez kilómetros), Corren tanto hombres como mujeres, y van muchas gentes disfrazadas pues además de los premios a los primeros lugares, se dan premios a los mejores disfraces (al fin de cuentas es una fiesta de Fin de Año)
Fue una buena manera de despedir el 2008, y a buena hora para poder celebrar como es debido el Año Nuevo.

Les deseo a todos Un año 2009 muy próspero, que El Señor nos asista y proteja, que nos de mucho trabajo y muchas alegrías, En fin, ojala vea a alguno de Uds. En la Carrera de San Silvestre el 31 de Diciembre, yo por supuesto estaré tomando las fotos ( Si Dios lo Permite), no corriendo pues: ¡me podría tropezar con mi lengua!

We are used to read only bad news about Guatemala: Newspapers would not sell if they were not yellow press or sensationalist. But in truth, there are many bad things happening in Guate. especially during the last few years.
But here there is a nice piece of news: Saint Sylvester Race has reached 51 years in Guatemala City

Every 31st of December, Saint Sylvester Race is run in Guatemala, it is the last sports event of the year. It is not run at night, as I (and many people) used to believe.

Since many years ago, I heard of the races: It was run in Brazil, it was run elsewhere and it was run in Guatemala! We usually associate anything concerning the final days of the year (Christmas and New Years Eve) with midnight, and so, I thought the race took place at this time. I used to think: How can people be running and suffocating themselves when they should be drinking and dancing (Me, the sportsman!!!)?
But I was wrong, at least for Guatemala. The race is called that way because in the Catholic Calendar, the 31st of December is Saint Sylvester’s day. And no, in Guatemala it does not take place at midnight, but rather in the afternoon at around 2:30 or so (Guatemalan time!) and it is 10 kilometers long. I know this now because my children have grown into fine sportsmen and one of them has run the race for 2 years, and we have all come, the family, to see him and support him while he runs. Many thousands come to participate and to see and support their loved ones, for the race is for anybody, not only professionals: all the people who want to participate and who also consider themselves capable of finishing the ten kilometers can do so; there are also many ones that run in costume, for there are prizes in cash for the first places and for the best costumes. It is after all a big Goodbye party for the year!

It was a nice way of finishing 2008, and in good time to celebrate afterwards as it is due!
I wish everyone a 2009 full of Prosperity. May the Lord Assist and Protect all of us, that He provides a lot of Opportunities and Happiness. Alas! I wish I can see some of you at Saint Sylvester Race the 31st December. I will be taking photographs (God allowing) not running ‘cause I could trip on my tongue!!!!
